What this New Zealand estimate includes
ImportSmart separates the parts of the import calculation so you can inspect the rate, tax base, government fees and other shipment costs instead of receiving one unexplained total.
- A free or simple percentage duty formula for the exact tariff item.
- GST at the current standard supported path of 15% on the calculated import base.
- Customs and MPI goods levies as separate components where supported.
- Freight, insurance, brokerage inputs and total landed cost in NZD.
- The tariff source timestamp so the data used for the result can be inspected.
The result is a planning estimate, not a binding customs decision, classification ruling or guarantee of the amount assessed at import.
What you need before calculating
Commodity code: Enter the exact 10-digit New Zealand tariff item. The current data model is item-specific and does not resolve a shorter heading automatically.
- The exact 10-digit New Zealand tariff item.
- Country of origin and a separately verified preference when relevant.
- Goods value, freight, insurance and exchange rate into NZD.
- Quantity or other units when the official formula is not a simple percentage.
Start in Simple mode. Open Advanced only for a verified exception, preference, customs-valuation choice or manual tariff rate.
How the automatic tariff check works
The tariff item is exact. ImportSmart resolves the current item and its rate group rather than selecting one of several possible statistical lines.
Simple formulas proceed. A free rate or one supported percentage can be calculated automatically. Quantity, compound or competing formulas trigger a stop.
Levies stay separate. Customs and MPI goods levies are shown alongside GST and duty so the landed-cost estimate remains auditable.
When ImportSmart stops instead of guessing
A visible stop is safer than a plausible-looking but unsupported duty figure. The automatic path asks for review when:
- The code is not exactly 10 digits or the item is absent from the current archive.
- Multiple current rate records remain possible for the selected group.
- A formula needs quantity, a unit factor or a compound calculation not supplied by the user.
- A concession, excise rule or special treatment requires separate confirmation.
Official tariff source
ImportSmart identifies the source used by the supported calculation path. For classification and final entry decisions, check New Zealand Customs Service — Working Tariff Document directly.
Tariffs and trade measures can change. Confirm the commodity code, effective date, origin and any special treatment before relying on an estimate for a customs declaration or commercial commitment.
New Zealand calculator questions
Why does New Zealand require the exact 10-digit item?
The tariff data is item-specific and may attach different formulas or levies to nearby lines. ImportSmart therefore does not expand a shorter heading and choose a line automatically.
Does the result show how current the data is?
Yes. The supported New Zealand result includes the timestamp of the CusMod tariff source used for the lookup.
What if the duty formula is based on quantity?
The automatic percentage calculation stops. Quantity-based and compound formulas require the relevant units and item-specific interpretation, so ImportSmart does not replace them with zero or an estimated percentage.
